Barpeta Town
Barpeta is a district headquarters and with the same name a district stands in Lower Assam. The name is connected with the words –Barpith, Barpat, Barpit, etc. Barpeta was a part of ancient kingdoms of –Pagarjotic, Dharmaranya, Kosharanya, Champakaranya, Pragjyotisha, Seres, This, Thina, Khamru, Kamrupa, Rumi, Chaulistan, Baharistan, Vaisalilong, Mungdunchunkham etc. The important ancient rulers of this region were: Mahiranga, Sung Saumara, Ratnasura, Samabarasura, Hatakasura, Raktasura, Ghatakasura, Narkasura, Bhagadatta etc. In medieval time, the region was occupied by the descendants of -Sudras, Varmans, Salastambhas, Palas, Devas, Khens, Bhuyans, Koch, A:hom, Mughals etc. Barpeta was known for ‘Lehi Dangra’ village of legendary personality ‘Dak’ The famous Neo-Vaisnavite Gurus Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavdeva had their stay in this place for several years and they founded 'Barpeta Kirtan Ghar'. The famous 'Vrindavani Bastra' was weaved here by the local weavers. The other Vaisnavite scholars of Barpeta were: Mathura Das Ata, Gopal Ata, Damudardeva, Harideva. The important historical places are: Patbaushi, Jagara, Bhavanipur, Daulasal, Sarthebari and all of them connected with Vaisnavism. The old names of Barpeta are: Tatikuchi, Vaikunthapur, Chunpura etc. Barpeta is famous of religious ‘Hatis’. The famous Bhotheli, Holi and Rash festivals observed with great celebrity at Barpeta.
